A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will launch NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39-A at 7:26 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29. The mission marks the first time the telescope will leave Earth, destined for Lagrange Point 2, a million miles from Earth where the James Webb Space Telescope is stationed. The rocket, composed of three Falcon 9 boosters, will carry the $4.3 billion telescope designed to study dark energy and search for exoplanets.

The Roman Space Telescope will have a 100 times wider field of view than the Hubble Space Telescope, despite having a similarly sized lens, and will collect data 1,000 times faster. Over its five-year primary mission, it will map billions of galaxies, discover thousands of planets outside our solar system, and study black holes. The telescope's journey to Lagrange Point 2 will take about a year, with scientists expecting it to begin scientific operations in 2027.

Space Launch Delta 45's weather team gives a 60% chance of favorable conditions for Sunday's launch, with showers and cumulus clouds the main concerns. If delayed until Monday, the chance improves to 70%. Two of the Falcon Heavy's boosters will return to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for landing, targeting Landing Zones 2 and 40. One booster will make its first flight, while the other previously supported two Falcon Heavy launches.

The launch comes as SpaceX shifts focus toward its Starship program, though the Falcon Heavy remains a critical workhorse for heavy-lift missions. NASA officials said the Roman telescope's data will help scientists understand the universe's expansion and the nature of dark energy, a mystery that makes up 70% of the universe's mass-energy content. The mission is expected to operate for at least 10 years, with potential extensions based on performance.
