The Melbourne Police Department has launched an interactive crime map, giving residents access to real-time crime data across the city. The tool, available on the MPD website, lets users zoom in on specific areas, filter incidents by date, and subscribe to email alerts for updates. Officials said the map is designed to help residents stay informed about criminal activity in their neighborhoods. "Transparency is key to building trust," said a department spokesperson. "This map puts information directly in the hands of the community." The map includes data from the past year, with categories like theft, vandalism, and violent crimes clearly labeled. Users can click on individual incidents to see details such as location, time, and police response. The tool has been praised by local residents, some of whom said it will help them feel more connected to their neighborhoods. "It’s reassuring to know what’s happening around me," said one user. The map is part of a broader effort by the MPD to improve communication with the public. Similar tools have been used in other cities, but this is the first such initiative in Brevard County. The department plans to update the map weekly with new data. Residents can access the tool at melbourne.gov/mpd-crime-map. The map does not include sensitive information like victim names or addresses. Officials emphasized that the data is meant to inform, not alarm. "We want people to be aware, not fearful," the spokesperson added. The tool is available in both English and Spanish. The MPD also plans to host a virtual walkthrough for residents next week to demonstrate how to use the map effectively.
