Edgewood senior Jonas Dowdell and the Cocoa girls 4x100 relay team took top honors at the FHSAA State Track and Field Championships on May 7 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. The events marked the first day of competition for Class 2A, with Brevard County athletes securing two gold medals and two silver medals. Dowdell won the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 9:31.07, edging out competitors from across the state. His performance was the highlight of the day for Edgewood, which also saw its girls 4x800 relay finish eighth.
The Cocoa girls 4x100 relay team of I’Yana Barnes, Diamond Bryant, Jayla Edgecombe, and La’Nija Thomas claimed gold with a time of 47.38 seconds. Bryant added to the team’s success by earning silver in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.03 seconds. She also placed eighth in the 200-meter race. Cocoa senior Malik Evans finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, and the school’s boys 4x100 relay team took eighth place.
Other Brevard County athletes earned medals across multiple events. West Shore’s Landon Plechaty finished second in the javelin with a throw of 54.32 meters. Cocoa Beach’s Rylan Reyes placed fifth in the 1600-meter run. The boys 4x400 and 4x800 relays from Cocoa Beach recorded the fifth-fastest times in their respective events. Astronaut’s Frank Venzara placed seventh in the 400-meter dash, while Noah McCollam earned sixth in the 3200 and Kaylee Edwards took seventh in the long jump.
Titusville’s Alexander Christian finished eighth in the long jump. Raines dominated the boys team scoring with 83 points, while Cocoa Beach earned 14 points. The results underscored the competitive landscape of Class 2A, with Brevard County athletes making their mark on multiple fronts.
