The Eastern Range is undergoing significant upgrades to handle the growing number of launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center. Space Launch Delta 45, part of the U.S. Space Force, has been working to improve tracking systems and safety protocols since 2023. The range supported 42 launches in 2025, up from 28 in 2022. Officials say modernization efforts will allow for faster turnaround between missions. "We’re adapting to the needs of both government and commercial operators," said a Space Launch Delta 45 spokesperson. The upgrades include new radar systems and updated communication networks. These changes are expected to reduce delays caused by weather or technical issues. The range has also expanded its collaboration with private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. In 2025, SpaceX conducted 18 launches from the area, more than any other operator. The increased activity has led to longer work hours for range personnel. Some employees report working 12-hour shifts during peak launch seasons. The Space Force has added temporary housing near the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to accommodate the workforce. The modernization project has a budget of $1.2 billion, with $450 million allocated for infrastructure improvements. The remaining funds will go toward training and technology upgrades. The range’s director confirmed in a March 2026 briefing that all systems are on track for full implementation by 2027. The upgrades are part of a broader effort to make the Space Coast the primary hub for U.S. space operations. The area already hosts 60% of all domestic satellite launches. With the expansion, that percentage is expected to rise to 75% by 2028. Local officials have welcomed the changes, though some residents have raised concerns about increased traffic and noise. The Brevard County Commission approved a resolution in February 2026 to study the long-term impacts of the expansion. The resolution also directed county staff to work with the Space Force on mitigation strategies.
