Eastern Florida State College's softball team swept St. Petersburg College in a doubleheader Saturday at Titan Softball Complex. The Titans improved to 37-13 overall and 23-11 in the Citrus Conference with an 8-0 and 8-1 victory. The wins kept them in contention for a top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
In the first game, pitcher Zoey Mills limited St. Petersburg to six hits over six innings, striking out five batters. The Titans' offense exploded early, with Avery Velazquez driving in the first run. Jaelynne Whipple's 11th triple of the season extended the lead, and the team added three more runs in the third inning. Velazquez finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Madison Velazquez and Emma George each had two hits.
The second game followed a similar script. Mills again held St. Petersburg to just one run, allowing six hits. The Titans added three runs in the second inning and tacked on two more in the fifth. Annalyn Duncan and Madison Velazquez each had two hits, and Velazquez drove in two runs with a double. The shutout innings from Mills gave the team a decisive edge.
The sweep marks the Titans' fourth straight win and keeps them in a tight race for the Citrus Conference's top seed. Head coach Sarah Mitchell said the team's focus on fundamentals has paid off. 'We've been executing pitches and plays that we've practiced all season,' she said. 'This is a big step for us, but there's still work to do.'
