Eastern Florida State College's Cocoa Campus now offers an Associate in Science degree in Interactive Media Production Technology, designed to meet demand in Florida's expanding audio-video industry. The program, which began enrolling students in fall 2025, combines hands-on training with courses in digital storytelling, editing, and production techniques. Rae Gallaway, a current student, transitioned to the program after taking a photography course and working with her father in Hollywood film sets. "Humans have always been storytellers," Gallaway said. "Filmmaking is an extension of that. People will always chase that connection." The program's curriculum includes practical effects and collaboration with industry professionals.
The Interactive Media program is housed in a 10,000-square-foot media lab on the Cocoa Campus, featuring green screens, motion capture systems, and high-end editing suites. Students work on projects for local businesses and nonprofits, gaining real-world experience. Faculty members include former Disney Imagineers and award-winning documentary filmmakers. "This program is where creativity meets technology," said program director Dr. Maria Lopez. "We’re preparing students for careers in film, gaming, virtual reality, and more." The first cohort of graduates is expected in 2027.
The program aligns with Brevard County's push to diversify its economy beyond aerospace and tourism. Florida's audio-video industry grew by 14% in 2025, according to the state commerce department, creating over 2,500 new jobs. Gallaway, who plans to transfer to a four-year university after earning her associate degree, said the program has already connected her with professionals in practical effects. "They’re super excited to see what we can pull off," she said. The college plans to partner with local studios and broadcasters to provide internships.
The program’s launch comes as Eastern Florida State College expands its offerings in the Cocoa Campus, which now hosts 12 degree programs. Enrollment for the Interactive Media program has exceeded projections, with 142 students enrolled as of April 2026. The college is also seeking grants to add virtual reality production equipment. "We’re seeing a lot of interest from students who want to work in emerging fields," Lopez said. "This program gives them the tools to do that here, in Brevard."
