Eastern Florida State College’s Cybersecurity program is equipping students with skills that align directly with job opportunities on the Space Coast. The program, which combines classroom learning with real-world experience, has become a key pathway for graduates seeking employment at local tech firms like L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, and Health First. Program assistant professor Nicole Dyess said the curriculum’s focus on practical skills has led to strong industry connections. “We’ve built a Cyber Titans network of alumni who are now hiring managers,” Dyess said. “They’re always asking for my top students and their résumés.”
The program emphasizes laboratory work, national competitions, and internships. Students study cryptography, network architecture, malware identification, and phishing investigation. Courses are designed to mirror the challenges faced by professionals in the field. Dyess, who has 20 years of experience in systems engineering and network security, said the program’s relevance is driven by employer demand. “Companies here are looking for people who can do hands-on work,” she said. “Our students are trained to step into those roles immediately.”
Students also gain experience through partnerships with local businesses. Internships at firms like L3Harris provide opportunities to work on projects related to cybersecurity threats and solutions. Program leaders said the Space Coast’s concentration of aerospace and defense companies creates unique opportunities for graduates. “There’s a lot of cool work happening here,” Dyess said. “From securing satellite communications to protecting health care data, the applications are diverse.”
The program’s success is reflected in its graduates’ career placements. Alumni have taken roles in network security, data analysis, and information systems management. Dyess noted that some graduates have even moved into leadership positions within six months of completing the program. “We’re not just teaching theory,” she said. “We’re preparing people for the jobs that are available right now on the Space Coast.”
