A 60-year-old man was pulled from his car stuck on railroad tracks in Melbourne just before a southbound freight train struck it at 9:23 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. The incident occurred on Fee Avenue north of Palmetto Avenue, according to Melbourne police. A motorcyclist spotted the driver inside the sedan as railroad crossing arms descended and helped pull him to safety. The train hit the car and damaged the crossing arm where the tracks intersect Palmetto Avenue, police said. The driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. "The train pushed the sedan into the motorcycle and the crossing arm," Sgt. Benjamin Slover of the Melbourne Police Department said in a press release. The collision destroyed the car and left the crossing arm inoperable. Palmetto Avenue remained closed Monday as crews worked to repair the damage. Police investigated the scene through the night. No other injuries were reported. The motorcyclist who helped the driver was not identified. The accident highlights the dangers of railroad crossings in the area. Work crews continued cleaning up wreckage Monday. The police are reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses to determine how the car ended up on the tracks. Authorities have not yet released the driver’s name or condition. The incident is under investigation as a possible traffic accident. The crossing arm is expected to be repaired within days, Slover said. The Florida East Coast Railway operates the tracks in the area.
