A driver escaped from a sedan that was struck by a freight train on railroad tracks north of Palmetto Avenue in Melbourne late Sunday, police said. The incident occurred around 9:23 p.m. Aug. 30 after the sedan became stuck on the tracks. Authorities were called to the scene following reports of the vehicle blocking the tracks. A motorcyclist who arrived at the scene said he saw the railroad crossing arms lowering and rushed to help the driver. The driver was able to exit the sedan and move to safety before the train hit the vehicle. The collision pushed the sedan into the motorcycle and damaged the railroad crossing arm at the intersection of the tracks and Palmetto Avenue. The driver was not injured but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, according to the Melbourne Police Department. Palmetto Avenue was closed temporarily for repairs to the damaged crossing arms but has since reopened. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and the train operator reported no injuries among its crew. Police are investigating the cause of the sedan becoming stuck on the tracks. The driver has not been identified, and no charges have been filed at this time. The railroad crossing remains a focal point for local officials, who have previously raised concerns about visibility and signage at the site.
