Eastern Florida State College’s production of 'Into the Woods' received a Superior rating on May 12, the highest honor a production can earn from the Florida College System Activities Association Theatre Division. The award, based on a 100-point rubric, evaluates acting, directing, costumes, lighting, and other categories. The college’s Theatre Department celebrated the recognition as a milestone for students and faculty.
The production, staged through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International, was judged by a panel of theatre professionals. Scores were tallied across 10 categories, including ensemble performance and scenic design. The Superior rating means the production scored in the top 10% of all submissions statewide this year.
Dr. Jim Richey, who oversees the Theatre Department, said the achievement reflects years of preparation. 'This is a testament to the talent and dedication of our students,' he said. 'They worked 12 hours a week during the semester to perfect every detail.'
The production ran for three weeks at the college’s Melbourne campus. Over 2,000 people attended performances, including local educators and parents. Some students received job offers from regional theatres after showcasing their work in the production.
The award comes as the college expands its theatre program. A new 10,000-square-foot performance space is under construction on the Cocoa campus, set to open in 2027. The department plans to apply for more regional theatre awards next season.
