Dr. Sandy Handfield has been named the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient by Eastern Florida State College, honoring her 55 years of service to the institution and the Brevard County community. The award recognizes her work as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, where she has dedicated her career to advancing academic excellence and supporting students, faculty, and staff.
Eastern Florida State College President said Handfield's contributions have been central to the institution's growth and regional impact. 'Her leadership has shaped the college's development and strengthened its role in the community,' the president said during the announcement. Handfield, who graduated from EFSC in the 1970s, has spent her entire professional career at the college, starting as a faculty member before moving into administrative roles.
Over the past five decades, Handfield has overseen curriculum changes, expanded academic programs, and mentored countless students. She has also played a key role in EFSC's media innovation initiatives, which include training future filmmakers and content creators. 'She has always prioritized student success and academic quality,' said one colleague, who has worked with her for 20 years.
Handfield will be formally honored at an EFSC ceremony in May. The event will include remarks from students and faculty who have benefited from her work. With 55 years of service, she remains actively involved in the college's operations, continuing to influence its direction as it prepares for the next phase of growth.
