Kevin Verpaele has remained active in Brevard County sports since retiring from professional baseball in 2010. The former major league pitcher now works as a baseball coach at Merritt Island High School and serves on the University of South Florida's athletic advisory board. Verpaele, who played for six MLB teams over 13 seasons, has mentored hundreds of local athletes since moving back to the Space Coast in 2015. He helped lead Merritt Island to a 2022 state playoff appearance as head coach. "The kids here have the same drive I had," Verpaele said during a recent practice session at the school's stadium. "It's about preparing them for whatever path they choose." Verpaele's connection to USF dates back to his playing days when he earned his degree in business administration. He now advises the Bulls' baseball program on player development strategies. Local sports officials credit Verpaele with keeping Brevard's baseball tradition strong. The Merritt Island High School baseball team has posted a .523 winning percentage since Verpaele took over in 2018. His work with USF has also led to increased scholarship opportunities for Brevard County athletes. "Kevin understands the challenges young players face here," said USF athletic director Jeff Nee. "He's a bridge between our programs and the community."
