The land, located near the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Indiantown Cutoff Road, is now protected from future construction under deals involving the Brevard County Conservation Foundation and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The agreements include a mix of land purchases and easements, ensuring the areas remain available for wildlife and recreation.
The protected land includes wetlands, pine flatwoods, and coastal habitats that serve as critical corridors for species like the endangered Florida panther and the West Indian manatee. According to the county’s environmental department, the parcels also act as a buffer for nearby waterways, helping to filter runoff and maintain water quality. The deals were funded through a combination of state grants, private donations, and a $2.3 million contribution from the Brevard County government.
Local landowners who signed the agreements include the Martin family, who own a 200-acre tract near the Indian River, and a private company that holds a 400-acre parcel near the Space Coast. Both parties agreed to restrict development in exchange for tax incentives and public access to trails and observation decks. The Martin family said the decision was driven by a desire to preserve the land for future generations. 'We’ve seen what happens when development encroaches on natural areas,' said John Martin. The conservation foundation plans to monitor the protected areas for the next five years to ensure compliance with the agreements.
