The cold snap follows a week of unusually warm weather, with highs in the 80s over the weekend.
The front is expected to move into Northeast Florida on Sunday, Feb. 22, where freezing temperatures could affect inland areas. The National Weather Service warned of a "very significant cool-down" as winter returns, though temperatures will not reach the sub-freezing levels seen in early February. Forecasters noted the cold could temporarily paralyze iguanas, causing them to fall from trees, a phenomenon observed during previous freezes.
Residents are being advised to prepare for the sudden shift in weather. The cold front will bring a 50% chance of rain on Sunday, with daytime highs returning to the 70s by Wednesday. The National Weather Service Tallahassee office highlighted the front’s movement southward, emphasizing the potential for freezing conditions in parts of the state.
This cold snap follows a February freeze that impacted areas as far south as Miami. While the upcoming temperatures will be colder than recent weeks, they will not match the extreme cold earlier this month.
