Jordy Abdul, a senior at Cocoa Beach High School, has been named FLORIDA TODAY's All-Space Coast Boys Tennis Player of the Year. The award recognizes his standout performance during the 2023-2024 season, which included a 15-2 singles record and key contributions to his team's district championship run. Abdul's coach, Mark Thompson, said the recognition is well-deserved. 'He's consistent, competitive, and leads by example on the court,' Thompson said. 'His work ethic and focus set him apart.'
Abdul's journey to the top of the rankings began in middle school, where he started playing tennis at the Cocoa Beach Community Center. He has since competed in multiple regional tournaments, earning a spot in the state semifinals as a junior. His success has drawn attention from college scouts, with several Division I programs expressing interest in his recruitment. 'I've always loved the sport, but this year felt different,' Abdul said. 'I pushed myself harder in practice and stayed focused on my goals.'
The All-Space Coast honors are selected by a panel of coaches and sports editors from FLORIDA TODAY, which covers Brevard County. Abdul is one of three players from the area named to the all-region team, alongside teammates Ethan Ramirez and Liam Chen. The recognition comes as Cocoa Beach High School continues to build its tennis program, with new courts set to open at the school's athletic complex next month.
Abdul plans to compete in the USTA National Championships in August before making a final college decision. His performance this season has already secured him a scholarship offer from a local university, though he hasn't revealed which one. 'I want to play at the next level, but I'm also excited about the opportunities here in Brevard,' he said. 'This community has supported me every step of the way.'
