Cocoa Beach police are investigating a vandalism incident that left a tiki bar statue in disrepair after a man was seen damaging it late Monday. The incident occurred around 11:35 p.m. at a business on the north end of the island, according to officers. The suspect caused significant damage to the statue, which is a fixture at the establishment, prompting an active search for his identity.
The business owner, who asked not to be named, told investigators the statue was a longtime attraction for customers. Security footage shows the man breaking parts of the statue before leaving the scene. Police have not yet identified the suspect but are reviewing video from nearby businesses and residences.
Detective Maria Lopez said the damage is estimated at over $3,000. 'This was deliberate and targeted,' she said during a press briefing Tuesday. 'We’re following leads and speaking to witnesses.' Authorities have not released details about the suspect’s appearance but noted he was seen walking away from the scene without a backpack or other items.
The tiki bar, located at 1234 North Atlantic Avenue, is a popular spot for tourists and locals. The owner said the statue was a family heirloom passed down through generations. 'It’s more than just a decoration,' they said. 'It’s part of our history here.'
