Cocoa Beach High School's girls soccer team fell to Viera 6-1 on January 16 at a neutral site, extending the Minutemen's losing streak to two games. The loss drops Cocoa Beach to 16-5-1 overall, while Viera improves to 13-2-3. The game, played at a local field, saw Viera dominate the first half with three goals before Cocoa Beach scored once in the second half.
C. Dixon, the game's official scorer, reported that Viera's offense was relentless early, capitalizing on defensive lapses by Cocoa Beach. The Minutemen struggled to maintain possession in the first half, allowing the Hawks to control the tempo. Viera added two more goals in the second half to seal the win.
Cocoa Beach head coach Sarah Mitchell said after the game that her team needs to improve its communication in transition. 'We gave up too many easy chances,' she said. 'But we're still in the hunt for a playoff spot.' The Minutemen are currently fifth in the district standings.
Viera's win keeps them in first place in the conference, with a three-game lead over their closest competitors. The Hawks' defense held Cocoa Beach to just one shot on goal in the first half. 'Our preparation paid off,' said Viera coach Mark Thompson. 'We focused on pressing high and limiting their opportunities.'
The game was the first of two matchups between the teams this season. They will face each other again on February 14 at Viera High School. Tickets for that game are available through the Florida High School Athletic Association website.
