Cocoa Beach's girls basketball team fell to Merritt Island Christian 63-19 on January 27 at Merritt Island Christian's home court. The loss extends Cocoa Beach's losing streak to 17 games, dropping their record to 3-20 overall. Merritt Island Christian improved to 19-6 with the win. The game was called early in the fourth quarter due to the large score gap. "We didn't execute on either end of the court," said Cocoa Beach head coach Sarah Mitchell. "This team is still figuring out what it takes to compete at this level." Merritt Island Christian dominated from the start, outscoring Cocoa Beach 22-5 in the first quarter. The Cougars shot 52% from the field compared to the Minutemen's 28%. Merritt Island Christian's junior guard Emily Rodriguez led all scorers with 24 points. Cocoa Beach's only bright spot was sophomore forward Mia Thompson, who scored 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. The game was the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Merritt Island Christian will host Cocoa Beach again on February 10. The Minutemen are winless in their last 10 games and have struggled with turnovers, averaging 25 per game over that span. "We need to find a way to play with more urgency," Mitchell said. "If we don't, we're not going to be competitive in the postseason."
