The Cocoa Beach Fire Department raised a large American flag over A1A near Tower 51 in downtown Cocoa Beach at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. The flag remained visible throughout the day as part of ceremonies honoring the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Firefighters will conduct two memorial dispatches at 9:59 a.m. and 10:28 a.m. to commemorate the moments when the World Trade Center towers fell. The events are open to the public and include a moment of silence. Residents and visitors along A1A watched the flag unfurl as morning traffic passed beneath it. The fire department said the display is a way to remember those who died and to show community resilience. No other ceremonies are planned in Cocoa Beach for the anniversary. The flag will stay up until sunset. Local officials have not announced similar events elsewhere in Brevard County.
