The Cocoa Beach High School boys varsity basketball team defeated Satellite Beach High School 52-38 on Saturday, January 20, in a non-conference matchup at Satellite Beach. The game, played at Satellite Beach High School, marked Cocoa Beach's 17th win of the season and improved their record to 17-10. Satellite Beach, which fell to 19-6, had hoped to keep pace in their own conference standings but fell short against the Minutemen.
Cocoa Beach's offense dominated early, scoring 18 points in the first quarter. The team shot 42% from the field overall, compared to Satellite's 31%. Senior guard Jordan Miller led the way for Cocoa Beach with 16 points and six assists, while forward Ethan Carter added 12 points and seven rebounds. Satellite's leading scorer, junior guard Marcus Lee, managed 14 points but was held to just two three-pointers on six attempts.
The game was part of a busy week for both teams. Cocoa Beach had previously defeated Titusville High School 62-50 on January 18, while Satellite lost to Palm Bay High School 58-49 on January 16. Both teams are preparing for their final regular-season games in the coming weeks, with Cocoa Beach set to host Melbourne High School on February 2 and Satellite facing Rockledge High School on January 27.
Coaches from both schools emphasized the importance of the game in their respective seasons. Cocoa Beach head coach Mark Reynolds said the win was a result of improved defensive play and better ball movement. Satellite head coach Lisa Martinez called the loss a 'learning opportunity' but praised her team's effort in the second half, when they cut the deficit to 10 points.
The game drew a crowd of over 200 fans, many of whom were students from both schools. Local officials said the matchup highlighted the competitive spirit of Brevard County's high school basketball programs. The next scheduled game between the two teams is not yet confirmed, but both coaches have expressed interest in facing each other again in the postseason.
