Sarah Mitchell, a Cocoa Beach resident, has released her latest book, 'Stories from the Space Coast,' which collects narratives from residents in Brevard County. The book features interviews and essays from people in Cocoa Beach, Titusville, and Viera, focusing on local history and community life. Mitchell said she wanted to highlight stories that might otherwise go untold. 'There are so many interesting people here,' she said. 'This book is about giving them a platform.'
The 200-page book includes chapters on the development of the Kennedy Space Center, the evolution of the Cocoa Beach pier, and the experiences of long-time residents in the area. It also includes photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, many of which were donated by local families. Mitchell worked with the Brevard Public Library to gather some of the materials. 'We got a lot of support from the community,' she said. 'People were happy to share their stories.'
Mitchell, who has written for local magazines and newspapers, said the book took about two years to complete. She conducted over 50 interviews and spent months researching historical records. The book is available at local bookstores and libraries, including the Viera Branch of the Brevard Public Library. Mitchell is also planning a series of readings at community centers across the county. 'I want people to see themselves in these stories,' she said.
The book has already drawn praise from local historians and educators. Dr. Emily Carter, a professor at Florida Institute of Technology, called it 'a valuable addition to our understanding of Brevard's past.' The book will be featured in a display at the Brevard History Museum starting next month. Mitchell said she hopes the book will inspire others to share their own stories. 'There's always more to learn about this place,' she said.
