A 250-mile bike trail stretching from St. Petersburg to Titusville is nearly complete, with 13 regional routes expected to connect into a continuous path by late 2026. The Coast-to-Coast Trail, managed by the East Coast Greenway Alliance, will cross forests, swamps, and urban areas, offering cyclists a route through Brevard County and across the state. Daniel Paschall, manager of the Mid-Atlantic sector for the alliance, said the project aims to boost fitness, tourism, and local engagement. 'This trail isn’t just about biking,' he said. 'It’s about connecting communities.'
The trail’s Brevard section runs through Titusville, Cocoa, and Palm Bay, linking to existing paths like the Florida Legacy Trail. Construction crews have completed 90% of the work, with final connections expected to open in October. The route includes dedicated lanes separated from traffic, making it safer for riders. Local officials praised the project for promoting outdoor recreation but noted ongoing challenges with funding and land access.
Advocates say the trail will draw tourists and boost nearby businesses, though some residents worry about increased traffic. 'We’ve seen similar trails in other counties, and they’ve been a hit,' said one Cocoa resident. 'But we need to make sure this one is maintained properly.' The trail’s completion coincides with discussions about Florida’s public camping law, which critics argue puts unhoused residents at risk. Separately, mosquito experts warned that summer rains could spike populations, raising concerns about disease transmission.
Paschall emphasized that the trail’s success depends on community support. 'We’re not just building a path,' he said. 'We’re creating something that will last for decades.' The final segment through Brevard is expected to open in time for the 2027 Space Coast Bike Festival, which organizers hope will draw thousands of riders.
