Cape Canaveral officials are pursuing state and federal grants to address damage and upgrade facilities at the city’s launch site, as SpaceX prepares to launch its Starship rockets from Kennedy Space Center. The city’s request comes as the Space Coast positions itself for the next phase of space exploration, with Starship expected to conduct test flights from the nearby KSC complex in the coming months. City leaders say the upgrades are critical to handling the larger, heavier Starship vehicles, which require specialized infrastructure not yet fully available in Cape Canaveral.
The proposed improvements include repairing roads and access points damaged by previous rocket launches, as well as installing new equipment to support the unique needs of Starship missions. City Manager Tom Hines said the work is necessary to ensure safety and efficiency as the area transitions to hosting more frequent and complex space operations. “We need to be ready for what’s coming,” Hines said during a recent council meeting. “This isn’t just about fixing old problems—it’s about preparing for the future.”
The funding request highlights the growing role of Cape Canaveral in the space industry, even as SpaceX focuses its Starship efforts at Kennedy Space Center. Local officials argue that Cape Canaveral’s proximity to KSC and its existing infrastructure make it a logical location for supporting Starship-related activities, including payload processing and ground operations. The city has already begun coordinating with SpaceX and other industry partners to identify specific needs.
State legislators are reviewing the request, with some emphasizing the economic benefits of upgrading the site. “This is about jobs, innovation, and keeping Brevard at the forefront of the space economy,” said State Senator Janet Gray, who represents parts of the Space Coast. The city has not yet announced a target funding amount but expects the project to cost millions, with grants covering a significant portion.
As SpaceX continues testing Starship prototypes, Cape Canaveral’s efforts underscore the region’s ongoing commitment to space exploration. While the city remains secondary to KSC in major launches, officials say the upgrades will ensure it remains a key player in the industry’s expansion.
