Brevard County officials confirmed Monday that infrastructure upgrades are underway at Cape Canaveral to support the rising number of rocket launches from the area. The projects include expanding launch site access roads and improving utility systems to handle increased traffic from commercial space companies. "We’re seeing more launches than ever before, and our infrastructure needs to keep pace," said County Commissioner Jerry Day during a press briefing at the Brevard Space Coast headquarters. The upgrades come as SpaceX and United Launch Alliance have both increased their launch schedules, with 30 missions planned for 2024 alone. Local engineers are also reviewing drainage systems near Launch Complex 39A after heavy rains caused temporary delays in several missions last summer. The Florida Department of Transportation has allocated $12 million for road improvements on State Road 408, a key route for transporting spacecraft components to the Kennedy Space Center. Contractors have begun widening the road near the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, a project expected to be completed by late 2025. Meanwhile, the Brevard County Port Authority is working with NASA to expand dock facilities at the Port of Canaveral, which handles cargo for the International Space Station. Port director Maria Lopez said the expansion will allow for larger ships to dock without delays. "Every launch creates economic opportunities, but we need the infrastructure to back it up," she said. The upgrades are part of a broader effort to maintain Florida’s position as a leading hub for space commerce. With 12 active launch pads in the county and 15 companies operating in the sector, officials say the region must balance growth with safety and reliability.
