Burmese pythons have been spotted in northern Brevard County for the first time, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials. The invasive snakes were confirmed near Titusville in March 2024, marking their farthest northward movement in the county. Biologists say the pythons could threaten native wildlife and disrupt the area's delicate ecological balance. "We’re seeing them push into new territories," said FFWCC biologist Sarah Mitchell. "This is concerning because these snakes have no natural predators here." The pythons, which can grow over 20 feet long, have been found in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding areas. Local residents reported sightings near the Kennedy Space Center and along the Indian River. The FFWCC has launched a public awareness campaign to encourage residents to report python sightings. In 2023, the agency removed 1,243 pythons from Brevard County, a 15% increase from the previous year. "Every python we remove helps protect our native species," said FFWCC spokesperson Mark Thompson. The snakes are believed to have been released by pet owners or escaped from captivity. Their presence has raised concerns among local conservation groups. The Brevard Audubon Society is working with the FFWCC to monitor the situation. "These pythons are a serious threat," said society president Linda Nguyen. "They eat everything from small mammals to birds." The FFWCC is offering a reward for information leading to the capture of pythons. Residents are urged to report sightings through the agency’s online portal or by calling the Python Patrol hotline. The agency has also partnered with local schools to educate students about the dangers of invasive species. "We’re trying to prevent this from becoming a bigger problem," said Mitchell. "Early detection is key."
