Burmese pythons are surviving colder temperatures in Florida by hiding in burrows, according to new research, and sightings in Brevard County are increasing. Ecologists warn that while confirmed python encounters in the county remain rare, the actual number of snakes is likely much higher. The reptiles, which have thrived in the Everglades for over 25 years, are now expanding northward into areas like the St. Johns River marshes. Melissa Miller, an invasion ecologist at UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, said the growing frequency of python sightings in Brevard is a cause for concern. "When the frequency of sightings increases, you're going to want to pay attention, for sure," she said. "It's definitely something to have on your radar." Scientists previously believed that freezes, salty water, or human efforts like public hunts would limit the pythons' range. But recent studies show the snakes can survive cold snaps by coiling up in burrows of gopher tortoises or invasive armadillos. Those burrows are often in sandy areas that once supported Florida scrub jays, a threatened species. New DNA evidence suggests pythons are preying on scrub jays and other native wildlife across the state, farther north than expected. The February 2026 freeze, which killed many plants and animals, did not stop the pythons. Researchers found some snakes survived by staying in burrows, and there are signs they are breeding there. This adaptability has ecologists worried about the long-term impact on Brevard's ecosystems. "We’re seeing more pythons near mangroves and in the ocean, which are critical habitats for birds and fish," Miller said. "It’s not just about the snakes—it’s about the entire food web." Brevard County has reported a steady rise in python sightings in recent years, though exact numbers are hard to track. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages residents to report encounters, but experts say many snakes go undetected. With pythons now appearing in areas once thought too cold or inhospitable, local conservationists are pushing for more aggressive monitoring and control measures. "This isn’t a problem that will go away on its own," Miller said. "We need to act before it’s too late."
