Melbourne High School's baseball team edged Palm Bay 6-3 in a tightly contested game on March 5 at Fleming Field, marking the Bulldogs' first win of the season. The contest, played under clear skies and a full moon, drew over 200 fans to the stadium, with families packing the bleachers for the rivalry matchup. "We knew coming in that Palm Bay would be tough," said Bulldogs coach Mark Thompson. "But our guys stayed focused and executed when it mattered most."
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the bottom of the third inning when senior shortstop Brady Derfuss lined a bases-loaded single to right field, scoring two runs. The Pirates responded in the top of the fourth, trimming the deficit to 3-2 after a two-out RBI double by Miguel Martinez. But Melbourne's pitching held strong, with junior starter Dustin Youngs allowing just three earned runs over five innings. "Dustin located his fastball well and mixed in a sharp changeup," said Thompson. "That kept their lineup off balance."
Melbourne extended its lead in the fifth inning after a two-out rally. Gabe Gonzalez reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Delmis Rosario, who later added a two-run double in the sixth. The Bulldogs' defense also played a key role, highlighted by Nolan Werle's game-ending tag at second base to end the seventh. "We've been working on our communication all spring," said Werle. "That play was the result of everyone trusting each other."
Palm Bay, which entered the game with a 2-1 record, struggled to contain Melbourne's offense. The Bulldogs capitalized on five Pirate errors, scoring two unearned runs in the second inning. "We made some mental mistakes that cost us," admitted Pirates coach Roberto Mendez. "But I'm proud of how our kids fought." The Pirates' lone bright spot came in the eighth, when Mason Lapointe's RBI single cut the deficit to 6-3.
The win improves Melbourne's season record to 1-2, while Palm Bay falls to 2-2. The teams will meet again on April 12 at Palm Bay High School. With the weather forecast calling for rain on Saturday, the Bulldogs' next home game is set for Wednesday against West Boca Raton.
