Firefighters battled another brush fire in The Compound area of Palm Bay on Wednesday, marking the latest in a series of suspicious fires that have plagued the region over the past weeks. The flames burned through approximately 15 acres near Sapodilla Street, prompting a joint response from Palm Bay Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service. Assistant Fire Chief John Ringleb noted that a smaller fire started away from the main blaze, raising questions about the origin. 'There’s a level of suspicion we’re looking at,' Ringleb said, emphasizing the unusual nature of the incident.
Jacob Miller, a resident who moved to Alwar Avenue in March, described watching the fire from his home. He said he was unaware of The Compound’s history of fires before relocating. 'The only thing I can do is protect the home as best I can,' Miller said, expressing frustration over the ongoing problem. His family’s experience highlights the growing concern among newer residents about the area’s recurring fire issues.
Fire crews have faced increasing challenges as the frequency of fires has risen. Ringleb said the repeated incidents are stretching resources thin, forcing units to be pulled from multiple stations. 'Somebody is out here doing this,' he said. 'It’s putting us at a disadvantage.' The fires have also drawn scrutiny from officials, who continue to monitor the area for potential flare-ups.
