A five-acre brush fire near two private schools in north Melbourne was mostly contained by Brevard County Fire Rescue crews on Thursday, Feb. 26. The blaze broke out in the 2800 block of Business Center Boulevard, a residential area just south of Faith Fellowship Academy and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy – Upper School. Fire officials said the fire spread quickly but was brought under control by late afternoon with the help of aerial water drops and multiple fire engines on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to a Brevard County Fire Rescue spokesperson.
Firefighters arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m. and worked to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes and businesses. Aerial support from fire planes dropped water over the burning area, which officials said helped slow the fire’s advance. Crews focused on securing the perimeter and preventing the flames from reaching the two schools, which are located about a quarter-mile away from the fire’s origin. No structures were damaged during the incident, and no injuries were reported.
Residents in the area were advised to stay indoors during the height of the firefighting efforts. Local officials said the fire was declared contained by 6:45 p.m. but crews remained on site to monitor for any flare-ups. The fire burned through dry brush and grass, a common fuel source for wildfires in the region during the dry season.
Brevard County Fire Rescue is continuing to investigate how the fire started. Officials have not ruled out human activity, but no suspicious items or signs of arson were found at the scene.
