The Brevard Zoo has formally asked local officials for a second extension to finish its new aquarium, which has faced repeated setbacks since breaking ground in 2022. The facility, initially expected to open in late 2023, is now projected to be completed in early 2025. Zoo officials cited unexpected challenges with securing permits and coordinating with contractors as the main reasons for the delays. The aquarium is part of a $35 million expansion aimed at enhancing the zoo’s marine life exhibits. Zoo Director Sarah Mitchell said the team is working to resolve outstanding issues but needs more time to ensure the project meets safety and quality standards. 'We’re committed to delivering a world-class experience for visitors and the animals,' Mitchell said in a statement. The extension request was submitted to the Brevard County Commission last week and is expected to be reviewed at the next public meeting on April 12. Local residents have mixed reactions to the delays. Some supporters, like retiree James Carter, say the aquarium will be a 'major draw' for the area. Others, including parent Maria Gonzalez, express frustration over the prolonged timeline. 'We’ve waited years for this,' Gonzalez said. 'It’s time to hold them accountable.' The aquarium’s design includes interactive displays, a 50,000-gallon ocean tank, and habitats for rescued sea turtles. Construction is currently underway on the eastern side of the zoo near the existing flamingo enclosure. If approved, the extension would allow the project to proceed without facing penalties for missing deadlines. The zoo has not yet announced a final opening date but says it will provide updates as the work progresses.
