Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida, has held a spot in the nation’s top five zoos for the seventh year in a row, according to the USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards. The zoo rose to No. 5 in this year’s ranking, moving up from sixth place in 2025. The list, determined by reader votes after a panel of travel experts nominated 20 zoos, was released March 18, 2026. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium claimed the top spot.
The 117-acre Brevard Zoo, home to more than 900 animals, offers unique experiences like kayaking through a Florida wetland and exploring elevated canopy walkways in South American habitats. The zoo also hosts conservation programs, camps, and after-hours events that provide hands-on learning opportunities. It placed No. 4 for Best Zoo Membership in the same awards.
Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens, located 170 miles north of Melbourne along the Trout River, also made the list, ranking No. 4. The zoo features a walking safari, botanical gardens, and exhibits including giant anteaters and vampire bats. ZooTampa earned recognition for its David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, placing No. 10 for Best Zoo Exhibit.
The Brevard Zoo’s rise to No. 5 marks its highest position since 2020. The zoo’s director, Sarah Mitchell, said the ranking reflects the institution’s focus on animal welfare and immersive visitor experiences. 'We’re proud to keep improving,' she said. 'Our kayaking program and conservation efforts have drawn attention from across the country.'
Other Florida zoos did not make the top 10 this year. The rankings highlight the competitive nature of the industry, with zoos across the nation vying for recognition based on visitor experiences, conservation work, and educational programs.
