Brevard Public Schools has recommended the termination of Dan Bennett, a teacher at Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School and former president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers (BFT). The district released a statement Friday saying Bennett allegedly failed to report an incident in September 2025 where two students engaged in oral sex while under his supervision. The case is scheduled for review by the Brevard School Board on March 10.
Bennett, who taught at the school for over a decade, is accused of not notifying administrators or law enforcement after witnessing the incident. The district said Bennett’s failure to report the event violated school policies and raised concerns about student safety. The BFT’s current president, Anthony Colucci, initially asked the district to let Bennett retire quietly without disciplinary action, according to school officials.
The incident occurred during a supervised activity at the school, which is located in the Melbourne area. District officials emphasized that the recommendation follows an internal investigation and multiple meetings with school leaders. Bennett has not publicly commented on the allegations, and his attorney has not responded to requests for comment.
The Brevard Federation of Teachers has not formally taken a stance on the case, though Colucci’s request for a quiet retirement has drawn criticism from some parents and educators. The School Board’s decision on March 10 will determine whether Bennett is terminated or if further action is taken. The district said it will provide updates after the board meeting.
