The boat capsized at 5:54 p.m. on Monday, May 25, near the Indian River side of Cocoa Beach. Brevard County Fire Rescue said a good Samaritan helped the boaters reach shore. Officials did not immediately identify the vessel or its origin. The incident added to the county's emergency response efforts during the three-day holiday.
Don Walker, a spokesperson for Brevard County Fire Rescue, said the majority of the 14 beach rescues occurred in the Cape Canaveral-Cocoa Beach area. He noted that high tides and strong currents contributed to several swimmers needing assistance. One victim was taken to a local hospital after being pulled from the surf near the Indialantic Pier.
Fire Rescue officials urged beachgoers to heed lifeguard warnings and stay within designated swimming areas. The county reported no fatalities during the holiday period. With thousands of visitors expected along the Space Coast during the long weekend, emergency responders said they remained prepared for increased activity.
