The 2026 Brevard County High School spring sports season is accelerating as teams prepare for district tournaments and state championship runs. With the postseason just weeks away, several programs have already solidified their status as top contenders, while others are looking to make late-season pushes. Merritt Island baseball leads the charge, sitting at 20-3 on the season after its only in-county loss to Melbourne. The Mustangs’ other defeats have come against nationally ranked teams, highlighting their consistency despite competition.
Merritt Island’s dominance has been a standout story this spring. The team’s 20-3 record includes a 14-game winning streak that began in late February, with their only losses coming from Melbourne and two top-16 national teams. Coaches and players alike have emphasized preparation for the district tournament, which starts April 25. "We’ve had a great group all year, but the next few weeks will define our season," said Merritt Island head coach Mark Thompson in a recent practice.
Other teams are also positioning themselves for postseason success. Satellite Beach’s girls’ soccer team, which has won 13 of its last 14 games, and West Boca Raton’s boys’ lacrosse squad, ranked No. 7 in the state, are among the programs eyeing state titles. The district tournaments, which determine playoff seeding, will begin April 25 and run through May 1.
The focus for all teams now is on maintaining momentum while avoiding key injuries. With the state championships in late May, every game carries weight. For Merritt Island, the challenge will be staying sharp after a long stretch of success. "We’re not complacent," said Thompson. "Every team we play is hungry, and we have to be ready."
