Brevard County's girls bowling scene is heating up as teams prepare for the annual Brevard Bowling Championship, scheduled for March 15-17 at the Space Coast Lanes in Cocoa. The event, which draws participants from across the county, will crown the region's top individual and team performers. Over 200 bowlers from 15 high schools are expected to compete, with the final standings to be announced at the awards ceremony on March 17. The competition includes divisions for varsity and junior varsity teams, with each match consisting of six games. Last year's champion, the Satellite High School varsity team, will defend their title against strong challengers including West Orange and Palm Bay High Schools. Local bowler Emma Johnson, a senior at Rockledge High School, is among the top contenders. She finished second in the 2023 state tournament and has been practicing daily at the Cocoa Bowl Lanes. 'We're focused on improving our consistency,' Johnson said. 'This is our chance to show what we can do on a bigger stage.' The event also features a junior division for younger athletes, with prizes for top scorers in each category. Coaches and parents have praised the tournament for providing a platform for young bowlers to gain experience. 'It's a great way for the kids to compete against others in the area,' said Mike Thompson, coach of the Palm Bay junior team. 'They get to see where they stand and learn from the best.' Results will be posted on the Brevard Bowling Association website immediately after the final matches. The championship is hosted by the Brevard County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, with support from local sponsors including the Cocoa Chamber of Commerce and Space Coast Lanes.
