A Brevard County deputy is under investigation after allegedly hitting a dog with a patrol vehicle and driving away without stopping on July 19 in Port St. John. The incident occurred late Sunday night on Golfview Avenue, just off I-95, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Wayne Ivey confirmed an internal investigation was launched after concerned citizens reported the alleged hit-and-run. The injured dog is expected to recover, and the sheriff’s office will cover its medical costs, Ivey said.
A witness named Chris was driving on Golfview Avenue when he saw a dog running along the sidewalk. He pulled over to rescue it but arrived too late. The dog darted into the street and was struck by a passing patrol vehicle. Chris rushed to the animal’s side and called 911, telling FOX 35 News the dog had broken legs, head injuries, and blood in its mouth. “He kept driving,” Chris said of the deputy, adding the dog “would have definitely been struck again and most likely killed” if he hadn’t intervened.
BCSO confirmed dispatchers received the 911 call around 10 p.m. and sent deputies to the scene. The sheriff’s office did not immediately identify the deputy involved in the incident. Ivey said the internal investigation would determine whether the officer violated departmental policies. No charges have been filed yet, and the case remains under review.
The dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic, where it is receiving treatment. Chris described the animal as “panting” when he found it but “seemed okay” despite severe injuries. The incident has sparked local concern about police accountability, with residents urging transparency in the investigation. Brevard County officials have not commented publicly on the case beyond Ivey’s statements.
