A summer program called 'Adulting Camp' will help Brevard County teens navigate life after high school through hands-on lessons in budgeting, career planning and communication. The course runs June 8-12 at the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Cocoa for students aged 15-18. Gayle Whitworth-New, a 4-H Youth Development Agent with UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County, said the program aims to give teens practical skills often missing from traditional classrooms. 'The goal is to increase confidence and readiness for adulthood by giving participants real-world tools they can use immediately,' Whitworth-New said. The camp includes simulations where teens experience balancing a budget as a 26-year-old adult, facing scenarios like flat tires, drained bank accounts and roommates who leave dishes in the sink. Lessons also break down financial concepts like gross income versus take-home pay, taxes and banking. Another module helps teens compare career interests with the realities of adult life, including whether potential salaries can support their lifestyle choices. The program emphasizes social and emotional skills, teaching healthy communication, conflict management and how personality traits influence relationships and career paths. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily at the UF/IFAS Extension Office, 12901 Lakeshore Drive in Cocoa. Registration details are available through UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County. The camp is part of a growing trend among educators to address gaps in financial literacy and life skills education for high school students.
