Brevard County's high school football teams are targeting the SSAA state championship this season after a two-year absence from the title game. Coaches and players from across the Space Coast say they're focused on improving fundamentals and building team chemistry ahead of the November tournament. "We've got a lot of work to do," said Patrick Thompson, head coach at Satellite High School. "But the kids are hungry and the community is behind us."
The SSAA state championship, held annually at Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland, draws teams from across the state. Brevard teams last won the title in 2019 when Satellite High School defeated Lake Mary 28-21. Since then, the county has struggled to advance past the semifinals. This season, six Brevard schools are competing in the 3A and 4A classifications, including Palm Bay High and West Boca Raton High.
Preparation has included late-summer training camps and partnerships with local sports organizations. The Brevard Sports Complex in Cocoa has hosted weekly drills for teams aiming to qualify. "We're emphasizing discipline and execution," said Sarah Mitchell, assistant coach at West Boca Raton. "Every practice is about getting better."
Parents and alumni have also stepped up, organizing fundraisers to support team travel and equipment needs. A recent benefit game at the Cape Canaveral High School field raised over $15,000. Local businesses are offering discounts to players and families as the season progresses.
The SSAA tournament begins November 11. Brevard teams will face stiff competition from counties like Seminole and Orange, which have dominated recent championships. But with a strong regional fan base and a history of producing NFL prospects, local coaches remain optimistic. "We're not just playing for a trophy," Thompson said. "We're showing what this community can do when we come together."
