Born in Miami in 1959, Pill joined the Metro-Dade Police Department in 1980 as a civilian employee before transferring to BCSO in 1997. She became a sworn deputy in 2002 after completing the academy. Over her career, she worked patrol, trained new officers, and investigated crimes. She was known for her work with at-risk youth and elderly victims of crime. The ceremony included a moment of silence, a flag-raising, and a presentation of a new memorial plaque. ‘She believed in second chances,’ said her niece, Maria Lopez, who spoke at the event. Pill’s family declined interviews after the 2012 shooting, but they have participated in annual remembrance events. The sheriff’s office said her legacy continues through community outreach programs named in her honor. The anniversary comes as BCSO faces a 12% increase in violent crime countywide since 2022, according to internal data.
