Brevard County has released an invitation to bid for the Sykes Creek Phase II Muck Removal Project, aiming to dredge up to 223,600 cubic yards of organic sediments from 80 acres of Merritt Island. The work area lies between County Road 520 (E Merritt Island Causeway) and County Road 528 (Jimmy Buffet Memorial Hwy). The project is part of the county’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon initiative, which targets muck buildup that harms marine life and fuels algal blooms by releasing nitrogen and phosphorus.
A temporary dewatering facility is available at the Nandivada Property on Merritt Island, located about 1.5 miles southeast of the dredge area. Contractors must use hydraulic dredging methods, and bids must be submitted by August 7. The county released the invitation on July 6, with a Pre-Bid meeting scheduled for July 16 at the Karen Rood Building in Merritt Island. Questions are due by July 29.
The project’s scope includes dredging, dewatering, and disposal of muck, which has accumulated over years and degraded water quality in the lagoon. Bids can be accessed through MyVendorLink using Bid Number B-8-26-36. The county emphasized that the work is critical to restoring habitat and preventing nutrient pollution.
