Brevard County officials are moving forward with a $12 million shoreline restoration project along the Indian River, but oceanographers are warning the work could alter natural sediment patterns and increase rip current risks. The project, which involves installing 1.5 miles of rock sills and beach nourishment along the northern Indian River, aims to protect coastal properties from erosion. However, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has flagged concerns about how the structures might interact with tidal flows. 'We're seeing preliminary data that suggests changes in wave energy distribution,' said Dr. Laura Martinez, a coastal scientist with the University of Central Florida. 'That could create stronger rip currents in certain areas.'
The county's Public Works Department insists the project follows federal guidelines for coastal resilience. 'Our engineers have modeled every scenario,' said spokesperson Mark Thompson. Preliminary results from July show a 12% increase in rip current reports near the construction zone compared to the same period last year.
County officials say they'll adjust the project as needed based on the study's findings. 'We're committed to balancing development with safety,' Thompson said. 'If the data shows a problem, we'll modify the design.'
