Brevard County residents will meet with state officials this week to discuss Blue Origin's proposed wastewater permit for its rocket launch site in Cape Canaveral. The meeting is part of a public process to review the company's plans for managing wastewater from rocket fuel and other operations at the facility. The meeting will take place at the Brevard County Government Center in Cocoa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend in person or provide written comments ahead of the session. Blue Origin has not yet released detailed plans for the wastewater system, but the company said it will submit technical data to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection by the end of the month.
Environmental groups have raised questions about how the permit would handle potential contamination from rocket propellants like hydrazine, which is toxic if released into water systems. A representative from the Space Coast Conservation Alliance said the community needs transparency about how Blue Origin will monitor and mitigate risks. 'We want to know how this will affect our beaches and drinking water,' the representative said.
Blue Origin did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The company has previously stated its commitment to environmental stewardship, but critics say more details are needed about its long-term plans. The permit is a prerequisite for expanding operations at the company's Launch Complex 36, which has hosted several test flights since 2021.
