Brevard County officials honored a nonprofit legal aid organization on Friday for six decades of service, marking the group's 60th anniversary with a ceremony at the Brevard Public Library. The event highlighted the nonprofit's role in helping thousands of residents navigate complex legal issues over the years. County Commissioner Tom Henry said the organization has been a 'stabilizing force' for families facing eviction, domestic violence, and other crises. 'They’ve provided a lifeline when people had nowhere else to turn,' he said. The nonprofit, which operates on a shoestring budget, serves more than 5,000 clients annually across Brevard County. Funding comes mostly from grants and donations, with no government support. Executive Director Maria Lopez thanked the community for its support. 'We’ve seen so many lives changed by access to basic legal help,' she said. 'But we’re still stretched thin. We need more advocates.' The ceremony included testimonials from clients who credited the nonprofit with helping them keep their homes or secure child custody. One attendee, Linda Martinez, said the group helped her fight an unfair eviction. 'They didn’t just give me a lawyer—they gave me my dignity back,' she said. The nonprofit plans to expand its services in the next five years, focusing on immigration and housing law. County officials pledged to support the effort, though they stressed that the group’s work remains underfunded. 'This is a county that values justice,' said Commissioner Henry. 'But we can’t pretend the problem isn’t growing.' The event ended with a resolution from the county commission to recognize the nonprofit’s anniversary formally.
