Brevard County is fourth in the state for kindergarten readiness, according to a report by the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Florida Business Alliance for Early Learning. The study found 52% of local children begin kindergarten ready to learn, outpacing the statewide average of 44%. Jovi Ramos, a Brevard resident, said her two daughters are eager learners who thrive in environments that blend science and art. 'Their brains are little sponges,' she said. Her 5-year-old, Aubrey Brooke, starts kindergarten this year. Ramos credited the Early Learning Coalition of Brevard County for supporting her children's development. 'They are both gifted and learn differently, but they are very advanced,' she added. Laura Gambino, executive director of the Early Learning Coalition, said high-quality programs from birth through prekindergarten make a difference. 'Children in high-quality environments show readiness by kindergarten,' Gambino said. The report highlights that unprepared kids may struggle to keep pace with peers. Research also shows kids ready for kindergarten are more likely to be reading proficiently by third grade. The Early Learning Coalition’s programs, including the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) initiative, aim to close gaps early. Gambino emphasized the importance of early intervention. 'The prekindergarten years are critical,' she said. The report comes as Brevard County officials continue to expand access to early education resources. Local leaders say the findings reinforce the need for sustained investment in early learning programs.
