Brevard County residents should prepare for a surge in household waste and recycling this holiday season, as the county’s waste management services anticipate a 20% increase in trash collection requests between December 25 and January 1. The Brevard County Solid Waste Management Division is urging residents to sort items properly to avoid delays in processing. "We see a spike in items like wrapping paper, plastic bags, and broken electronics during this time," said Division Director Linda Martinez. "Proper sorting helps keep our facilities running smoothly."
Residents are advised to place all recyclables—包括 paper, cardboard, aluminum, and plastics—in designated bins, while non-recyclable items such as food waste, yard trimmings, and hazardous materials should go in regular trash. The county has expanded temporary drop-off hours at the Titusville Transfer Station through January 15, allowing residents to dispose of large items like Christmas trees and furniture. "We encourage people to use these sites to reduce the burden on curbside services," said Martinez.
Local municipalities have also issued specific guidelines. The city of Cocoa requires residents to place holiday lights and decorations in the trash, not recycling bins, due to the high volume of mixed materials. Meanwhile, Palm Bay is offering free holiday recycling bins at its public works office through December 31. "These are practical steps to help everyone manage their waste without overwhelming our systems," said Palm Bay Public Works Supervisor Mark Thompson.
The county has also warned against common mistakes, such as placing holiday food waste in recycling bins or overfilling trash bags. "Overfilled bags can tear during collection, causing delays and requiring residents to reschedule pickups," said Martinez.
