A cold weather shelter in Brevard County will open tonight to provide warmth and support as temperatures drop across the Space Coast. The facility is located at the Brevard County Government Complex, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, and will operate from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily through March 15 or until temperatures rise above 40 degrees, whichever comes first. The shelter is part of a county initiative to help residents cope with the recent cold snap affecting the region.
The shelter will offer free blankets, hot meals, and access to restrooms and showers. Volunteers from local organizations including the Brevard Food Bank and United Way will staff the site. 'We're seeing more people needing help than usual this year,' said Sarah Thompson, a United Way coordinator. 'This is about keeping people safe and connected during a tough time.'
The shelter is open to anyone experiencing homelessness or facing housing instability. It will also provide information about long-term housing options and utility assistance programs. County officials said they are working with utility companies to ensure residents who qualify for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program are contacted.
Temperatures are expected to dip to 34 degrees tonight, with wind chill making it feel colder. The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for the area. 'This shelter is a lifeline for many,' said County Commissioner Joe Kuhn. 'We want to make sure no one has to endure this cold without basic needs met.'
