Brevard County officials confirmed Monday that the Melbourne tax collector’s office at 1450 E. New Haven Avenue is closed indefinitely following persistent air conditioning issues. The building’s cooling system has failed multiple times over the past month, according to county maintenance records. Temperatures inside the office have exceeded 95 degrees Fahrenheit on several occasions, prompting concerns about worker safety and public service disruptions.
The closure affects all in-person services at the office, including tax filings, license renewals, and property registration. County officials directed residents to use online portals or visit other county offices in Cocoa or Palm Bay for assistance. A temporary cooling unit installed last week provided limited relief but failed to address the building’s underlying electrical and HVAC problems.
County Manager Steve Hargrove said repairs are delayed due to a shortage of specialized contractors. "We’ve contacted three vendors, and none are available before August," Hargrove said in a statement. The office first reported cooling issues in late May, but maintenance crews were unable to resolve the problem during routine inspections.
Residents who rely on in-person services have expressed frustration. Maria Gonzalez, a retiree who visits the office weekly for property tax documents, said she has been unable to complete her paperwork. "I don’t have internet access at home, and this is the only place I can get help," she said. County officials are exploring options for mobile service units but have not announced a timeline for reopening the building.
