Brevard County airports have received $17 million in federal grants to fund infrastructure upgrades and job creation efforts. The funding, announced by the Federal Aviation Administration, will target improvements at the county's two major airports: Melbourne International Airport and Space Coast Regional Airport. Projects include runway resurfacing, terminal expansions, and enhanced navigation systems. "This investment will modernize our airports and support thousands of jobs," said Brevard County Commissioner Tom Henry. The grants are part of a larger FAA initiative to boost regional air travel capacity. Local officials estimate the work could generate up to 1,200 temporary construction jobs and 300 permanent positions in operations and maintenance. The money also includes $2.5 million for noise mitigation programs near residential areas. Airport officials plan to begin construction on priority projects by early 2024. The funding comes as Brevard County's aerospace industry grows, with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin operating nearby. The grants will help the airports handle increased traffic from commercial and private flights. The FAA selected Brevard County from 150 applicants nationwide for the funding. The county's Economic Development Commission has already identified potential sites for new hangars and cargo facilities. "This is a win for our economy and our residents," said Commissioner Henry. The grants must be spent by 2027, according to FAA guidelines. Local leaders say the upgrades will improve safety, reduce delays, and attract new businesses to the area. The airports currently handle over 4 million passengers annually, with projections showing a 20% increase by 2026.
