Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and multiple Space Coast police departments have stopped using the Flock license plate-reading system after a state order requiring removal of similar devices from Florida highways. The Florida Department of Transportation directed agencies to clear the systems from state rights-of-way by September 30, citing privacy concerns and potential misuse. Sheriff Ivey confirmed the halt via social media, joining Titusville, Melbourne, and Indian Harbour Beach police departments in suspending the technology. The move comes as part of a broader statewide effort to address growing public unease over surveillance tools.

The Flock system, which uses automated cameras to capture license plate data, had been deployed by some agencies for traffic enforcement and crime investigations. However, critics raised alarms about the lack of transparency in how data is stored and shared. The Florida Highway Patrol had previously used the system, but its use was suspended in 2020 after a state audit found no clear policy governing data retention.

Local officials did not immediately say whether they would resume using the technology after the 30-day deadline. Some agencies have explored alternatives, such as manual license plate checks or limited use of existing camera systems. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to requests for comment on long-term plans.

The FDOT order applies to all state agencies and contractors operating on Florida highways. Similar systems used by other counties, including those in Southwest Florida, have also been paused. The directive follows a wave of legislative and judicial scrutiny nationwide over automated license plate readers, with several states imposing restrictions on their use.

The suspension has sparked debate in Brevard County, where residents have expressed mixed reactions. Some community members welcomed the move as a step toward protecting privacy, while others questioned the impact on public safety. A hearing is scheduled for October 15 to discuss potential state-level regulations on the technology.
