Sheriff’s officials say the discovery may be connected to a March 26 incident in South Brevard County, where a man fled from Sebastian Police Department officers and entered the lagoon to evade capture.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission conducted a multi-agency search for the missing man after his disappearance. Search efforts lasted several days but turned up no evidence. Investigators now believe environmental factors, including water currents and weather patterns, may have carried the body south through the lagoon before it washed ashore in Indian River County.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has classified the case as a suspicious death investigation. Officials are analyzing the remains and reviewing surveillance footage from the lagoon area. No formal identification of the body has been made yet, and no next of kin have been notified.
